Title of Lesson: A book by its cover


Objectives:
1. Allow students to understand their own and others interests, culture, and expresions through art.
2. This also gives students an opportunity to explore the way watercolor paint and ink work on different surfaces.

Introduction:

Materials Used: Old books, scissors,glue, ink, watercolor  paints, paint brushes, magazines

Timeline for Lesson:
Activity/Procedure:
1. Students will first examine  and discuss how they identify themselves by writing things that symbolize what makes them.
2. Students are to choose a medium  to use to alter and add to the book how they see themselves or what is it that makes them as a person.
3. At the end of the project they are to present to the class their book and discuss it with the class.

Assessments (objective or subjective):
1. To allow the students understand their identity and how to portray it in art.

Title of Lesson: Judging a Book by its Cover

  1. (b)  Introduction.



    1. (1)  Four basic strands--perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation--provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Students rely on their perceptions of the environment, developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks. They express their thoughts and ideas creatively, while challenging their imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.

      1. (2)  Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:

Timeline for Lesson: 2 Weeks 



Activity/Procedure:
1. Students will view examples of many books covers made and discuss in class how the artist was able to portray what the book was about.

2. They then will choose a book of their own (that they have read outside or inside of class) and sketch 5 thumbnails of what they want to do. They then are to choose which thumbnail would fit best as a final drawing.

3. Students will then begin to illustrate their book covers on the watercolor paper lightly. Then they will apply the watercolor paint. Pen is optional to use depending on their piece.

4.  Students will then turn in their final product and be critiqued as a class.

Assessments (objective or subjective):

1. Students will be graded on their effort to design and illustrate their cover. They will be graded on their use of composition and craftsmanship on the final product.
